How to use the Freelance Contract Agreement Generator
- 1
Enter freelancer and client details
Fill in the legal name and address for both the freelancer and the client. For businesses, use the registered entity name rather than a trade name so the agreement is enforceable against the correct party.
- 2
Define the scope of work
Describe the project, list the specific deliverables, and set a timeline or milestone schedule. A precise scope is the single most effective tool for preventing scope creep once the project is underway.
- 3
Set payment terms
Choose a fixed fee or hourly rate, set a deposit percentage, and define the payment schedule — for example, 50% upfront and 50% on delivery. Clear payment terms reduce the likelihood of late or disputed invoices.
- 4
Configure ownership and revisions
Specify how many rounds of revisions are included and when intellectual property transfers to the client — typically upon final payment rather than upon delivery, which protects the freelancer if the client doesn't pay in full.
- 5
Download and send
Preview the agreement, copy the text, or export a PDF with signature blocks for both parties. Send it before starting work so both sides have a shared, written understanding of the deal.
Who this tool is for
Freelance designers, developers, and consultants who currently start projects on a verbal agreement or a vague email thread and want a real contract without hiring a lawyer for every gig. Small agencies onboarding new clients who need a consistent contract template across every project. Clients hiring their first freelancer who want a fair, standard agreement rather than drafting one from scratch.
FAQs about using the Freelance Contract Agreement Generator
At minimum, a scope of work, payment terms, a revisions policy, an intellectual property clause stating when ownership transfers, and a termination clause describing how either party can end the engagement. Missing any of these is a common source of disputes.
Include a clause stating that work outside the defined deliverables requires a written change order with an agreed fee before it begins. This gives you a documented basis for charging extra rather than absorbing unplanned work for free.
Most freelance contracts transfer IP ownership upon receipt of final payment, not upon delivery of the work. This protects the freelancer's leverage — if a client doesn't pay in full, they haven't legally acquired rights to use the deliverables.
A 30–50% deposit before starting work is standard for freelance projects, with the balance due on delivery or across milestones for longer engagements. Higher deposits are reasonable for new clients or projects with significant upfront costs.
They serve a similar purpose — defining a working relationship without creating an employment relationship — and are often used interchangeably. Some businesses use 'independent contractor agreement' specifically to emphasize tax and worker-classification status alongside the project terms.
A termination clause should specify a notice period and state that the client owes payment for work completed and expenses incurred up to the termination date. Without this clause, an early termination can leave a freelancer unpaid for finished work.
